CRNA Advocacy Alert: Oppose physician supervision of CRNAs in rural emergency hospitals today!
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has issued a proposed rule that would establish Conditions of Participation (CoPs) for Rural Emergency Hospitals (REHs) to meet in order to participate in Medicare and Medicaid. While the AANA supports the creation of the REH designation and the effort to reduce healthcare disparities in rural communities, the proposed rule, as written, will harm access to anesthesia care by requiring costly and unnecessary physician supervision of CRNAs in REHs.
It’s not too late to have this supervision requirement for CRNAs removed from the final rule. CMS is seeking comments on this proposed rule until August 29, 2022. The AANA and our coalition partners will be submitting official comments, and we ask all AANA members and supporters to submit a comment as well. Please follow the prompts to take action today!
Ask your U.S. Representative to Support Permanently Removing Supervision
U.S. Representatives Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) and Bob Latta (R-OH) are asking their colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives to join them in urging U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS) Secretary Xavier Becerra and Centers for Medicare & Medicare Services (CMS) Administrator Chiquita Brooks-LaSure to immediately and permanently remove physician supervision of CRNAs. CMS has the regulatory authority to do this by updating the current Medicare Conditions of Participation and Conditions for Coverage, and now is the time for them to take that step.
Ask your Representative to sign on to this letter by July 29, 2022, to help ensure patients in your community have access to the highest quality, most cost-effective anesthesia care.
